What is the Big Data Report Related?

Recently, China Tourism Academy and Meituan-Dianping have jointly released a “Chinese Night Dining Consumption Big Data Report”. The data reflects directly how loved by Chinese people to eat at night, such as supper, mid-night dining, snacks, etc. It also tells the stories about in which China cities, what kind of people and in what time period that Chinese spending the most at night dining. It may help you get to know a true Chinese night-eating culture.


About Meituan-Dianping

Meituan-Dianping is a Chinese tech company providing online group buying with coupons and locally found food delivery, tour, and other life entertainment service. The current name of Meituan-Dianping is generated after the combination of two platforms Meituan (Chinese’s Groupon) and Da Zhong Dian Ping (China’s most popular review & rating app on local food and search) since October 8, 2015. After the merger, then it debuted and was listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange on September 20, 2018.

According to the Internet’s third-party data agency DCCI’s China’s first Food Take-out Industry Report 2019, it tells that the market share of Meituan Food Delivery has reached 64.1% in China. It means Meituan-Dianping has already become the top one Chinese food delivery service provider and will continue to lead the Chinese food take-out market in 2019.

And from Meituan-Dianping’s latest 18Q4 financial report, its transaction amount spent on Meituan-Dianping’s platform in 2018 has increased by 44.3% to reach 515.6 billion yuan (Chinese RMB). Among them, the dining and food take-out consumption amount has grown to 282.8 billion yuan by 65.3% increased. Until the end of December 2018, the number of transaction members has broken through 400 million, by 29.3% increased. The active restaurant and retail store partners also increased to 5.8 million by 32.1% increased, surpassing previous year (4.4 million).

The report coming from Meituan-Dianping can largely reflect Chinese people’s actual night dining consumption conditions. Now, let’s follow the report and read the story it tells as below.

According to Meituan Dianping’s big data, the total dining consumption at night on Meituan and Dianping platform in 2018 has increased by 47% than the previous year.

Among them, almost 80% of night consumption is spent by ordering food delivery / take-out at night.

From 18:00 to midnight, all of them is the favorite period for Chinese to eat.

18:00~21:00 is the period for normal supper time.

There are over 30% of night dining consumptions spent after 21:00 in the evening, which is the golden time for their favorite mid-night snacks.


The month of most food consumption vs the lowest.

The summertime from July to August, as well as December, the end of the year,  is the peak of the most night dining consumption spent by Chinese.

February, the time when Chinese Lunar New Year (the most important Chinese festival, also called Spring Festival) took place, has the lowest consumption of the previous year.


Top 20 China cities loving to eat the most at night.

Among the top 5, Southern cities are more like to eat mid-night snack than northern ones, such as from Chengdu to Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

80% of the top 20 China cities are southern cities.

People in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Ningbo, and Hangzhou spent the most money (per capita) on eating at night.

The cities such as Xi’an, Kunming, Fuzhou, etc,  also has driven the night dining consumption due to tourism.
